What is Cervical Cancer?
Cancer that is formed in the cells and tissues of the cervix area is called cervical cancer. Cervix is the organ that connects the vagina and uterus. This cancer is caused by a virus called HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). This cancer is very slow-growing and usually have no visible symptoms at the start. This virus is spread through sexual intercourse.
Symptoms
In the early stages of this cancer, there are no obvious symptoms.
The early symptoms of cervical cancer are:
- Abnormal bleeding from the vagina after periods, intercourse, or menopause
- Continuous vaginal discharge that may be pinkish, watery, or mixed with blood
In advanced stages, cervical CA is spread to other organs and regions including the liver, lungs, intestines, and bladder. At this stage following symptoms may be seen:
- Pain on Bones or fractures
- Pain in legs
- Fatigue
- Less appetite
- Pain in pelvis
- Weight loss
- Swelling in one leg
- Discharge of feces or urine from the vagina
How to Diagnose Cervical Cancer?
Usually, a PAP test is done to diagnose this cancer. In this test, some cells are taken from the cervix and are examined under a microscope.
Causes
This cancer is caused by a virus that is transmitted by sexual intercourse.
