What is Cervical Cancer?
The cancer that is formed in the cells and tissues of cervix area is called cervical cancer. Cervix is the organ that connects vagina and uterus. This cancer is caused by a virus called HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). This cancer is very slow growing and usually have no visible symptoms in the start. This virus is spread through sexual intercourse.
Symptoms of Cervical Cancer
In early stages of this cancer there are no obvious symptoms.
The early symptoms of cervical cancer are:
- Abnormal bleeding from vagina after periods, intercourse or menopause
- Continuous vaginal discharge that may be pinkish, watery or mixed with blood
In advanced stages cervical cancer is spread to other organs and regions including liver, lungs, intestines and bladder. At this stage following symptoms may be seen:
- Pain on Bones or fractures
- Pain in legs
- Less appetite
- Pain in pelvis
- Weight loss
- Swelling in one leg
- Discharge of feces or urine from vagina
How to Diagnose Cervical Cancer?
Usually PAP test is done to diagnose cervical cancer. In this test some cells are taken from cervix and are examined under a microscope.
Causes of Cervical Cancer
This cancer is caused by a virus that is transmitted by sexual intercourse.
