What is Alopecia Areata?

It is a term that is used for the hair loss that is seen when our immune system attacks hair follicles by mistake. This type of attack by the immune system is normally not permanent. Dermatologists are actually unaware of the fact that why our immune system attacks hair follicles.

The most common symptom of Alopecia-areata is coin-sized, round, bald patches.

Symptoms of Alopecia Areata:

When a person is suffering from Alopecia areata then he usually experiences the following symptoms:

Patchy hair loss: The first and foremost sign that you will observe is one or more coin-sized, round, bald patches at the part of your body where you had hair previously. At the same time you will also start to observe clumps of hair at your pillow when you wake up in the morning. These these clumps will also be seen at your shoulders.

Alopecia-areata may also effect beard, eye brows and hair of other body parts.

Generally it has been seen that the process of hair fall occurs at the scalp. However, your eyebrows, eyelashes, beards etc can also become its victim.

Exclamation mark hairs: Sometimes, people notice several small sized hair present at the edges of the bald spots. You can recognize such type of hair quite easily as they are  thinner at the edges having the shape of the exclamation mark.

If you find clear white spots or lines at your nails and you feel that they have become quite rough and have lost their original spark then it is a sign of Alopecia areata. In some cases the nails become thin and split.

What Causes Alopecia Areata?

According to the hair experts this type of hair loss is in fact autoimmune condition in which human immune system attacks the hair follicles. A number of dermatologists are of the view that it is a genetic problem, but its real cause is yet to be identified.

How Alopecia areata is diagnosed?

When you start to observe the signs and symptoms of Alopecia areata then you are advised to visit a dermatologist to diagnose the problem. He would understand the signs that have been revealed to know whether you have become its victim or not. He would most probably recommend scalp biopsy to get the clear picture. It is also possible that he may want to get your blood tests.
